Lightnin Hopkins

On the walls of my studio here in Denver, there are records and posters, but the only art is a picture of Lightnin’ Hopkins from the New Orleans Jazz Festival. Every once in a while I sit down and listen to a live concert of his. There is something about his playing that I find enamoring.

If you can find it, you should watch a documentary called “The Blues According to Lightnin’ Hopkins”. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to find. I have yet to find a copy for sale, but it pops up on YouTube every once in a while. It doesn’t seem to stay uploaded very long though. Any aspiring guitarist, or anyone interested in American music in general, should give Lightnin’ a listen. If the documentary is unavailable, just find some concerts on YouTube, you won’t regret it.
